Appointing interim Man Utd manager would cause confusion - Schmeichel

Manchester United are in search of an interim manager and/or a permanent manager at the same time

Legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has urged Manchester United to swiftly complete their search for a new manager. The ex-Danish international believes that the decision of the club to appoint another interim manager throws the club into confusion.

Following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United have installed Michael Carrick as a temporary interim manager whilst they search for another interim manager before finally making a permanent appointment at the end of the season.

Schmeichel advised that the club would be best served if they announced a permanent manager before another interim manager is named to avoid further confusion.

"I’m a bit confused about the communication that goes out at Man United. This idea about an interim manager up until the summer and then somebody else from there," Schmeichel told talkSPORT.

"If I’m honest I hope that the next manager will be picked and will be in place before an interim manager is named because I don’t think the club needs to have that kind of confusion."

Meanwhile, the 58-year-old put forward Steve Bruce's name as a potential candidate to take charge of the club in the interim.

"But if that is the case, a few former players could put their name in the hat. Someone like Steve Bruce could be a really good option – a safe pair of hands to take charge of the team and the club for the rest of the season," he said.

Schmeichel noted that the club needs new faces to take charge of management, stressing that Carrick is going to be the same as the sacked Solskjaer.

The Danish legend said: "What the team needs more than anything is new voices in the dressing room, something different, another kind of inspiration.

“Even Michael Carrick said that, he worked for Ole for so long and he’s going to be the same as him.

“Carrick did very well in Villarreal but it’s just one game. It’s very important we get a manager in place and we look towards the future.”

Carrick led United to a 2-0 victory over Villarreal in his first match in charge. He will come up against a stiffer challenge in the form of Chelsea when United travel to face the league leaders on Sunday.
