Malawi vs Senegal: Can the Teranga Lions extinguish the Flames?
That is the biggest question heading into this part encounter between Senegal and Malawi later today.
Following a shaky start to the competition, Africa's top-ranked side, Senegal, faces a rather tricky game against a resurgent and confident Malawi.
Senegal's Teranga Lions have battled in their opening two matches at the AFCON 2021, scoring just one goal, a penalty in their first game, in 180 minutes.
Aliou Cisse's Senegal currently occupies second place in the group and heads into the third and final group match with all to play for.
However, their opponents, the Flames of Malawi, rekindled their campaign with an impressive 2-0 win over Zimbabwe in their second game.
Orlando Pirates star, Mhango Gabadinho, was the hero of the day after he scored both goals to become the first-ever Malawian to score a brace at the AFCON.
The win sees them go into this particular fixture still with a chance to pick one of the tickets to the round of 16.
Form and Head-to-Head
This is the first-ever meeting between the two nations at the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.
In terms of their respective forms, Malawi has already lost one of their two matches so far in the competition, while Senegal remains unbeaten with no goals conceded despite a shaky start.
Date, Time and Venue
The match is slated for today, January 18, 2022, at the Kouekong Stadium, Bafoussam, and will kick off at 5 pm, Nigerian time.
Prediction
It's a tricky one to call, Malawi will be very inspired for this one after the result the last time, but Senegal remains favourites given their pedigree and quality.
For this game today, the Teranga Lions must be wary of Gabadinho, if they can keep him quiet and perhaps, Senegal to win 0-1. Otherwise, another shaky performance and a share of the spoils.
