Turkish midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu has stated the importance of his winning goal for Inter Milan in their UEFA Champions League clash with Spanish giants FC Barcelona.

Inter secured an impressive 1-0 victory over Barcelona on Tuesday night at the Giuseppe Meazza courtesy of a first-half added-time goal from Calhanoglu.

The win gives Inter Milan their second win in Group C, a group widely regarded as the Group of Death with 2020 champions Bayern Munich also in their group.

Despite many controversial calls from the Matchday 3 fixture, the Italians made it to final time with three points, taking them to second position on the table behind Bayern Munich.

In his post-match press statement to Sport Mediaset as reported by Football Italia, Calhanoglu attributed their victory to the support they enjoyed in front of their home fans against the Xavi-led side.

The Inter Milan midfielder said: "It was very important that we get the win tonight, we had to send a signal above all to the fans, who are always close to us. They gave us a big hand this evening, we proved that we deserved the victory."

The 28-year-old set-piece expert noted that a big victory such as the one against Barcelona could jolt their season back to life coming off the back of consecutive defeats to Udinese and AS Roma in their domestic league.

"This game can really shake us up and change our season, because we want to build on it. As for qualification, we’ve got to stay calm and take it one game at a time," Calhanoglu concluded.

Inter Milan have had a mixed start to the 2022/23 season, having won five (5) games and lost exactly five (5) games also in their 10 matches before the meeting with Barcelona.

The Simone Inzaghi-led Inter side are currently 9th on the Serie A table with 12 points from eight (8) matches while they are second in their Champions League group behind only Bayern Munich who have a 100% record so far.
