Gervinho Côte d'Ivoire forward to miss 2017 AFCON due to injury

Côte d'Ivoire international forward Gervinho will miss the 2017 African Cup of Nations after rupturing his cruciate ligaments in training.

Gervinho was an influential figure when Ivory Coast won the 2015 AFCON title in Equatorial Guinea.

He will however not be available for the title defence as he ruptured his cruciate ligaments while in training with his Chinese Super League club, Hebei Fortune.

According to France Football, the 29-year-old has been flown to France to undergo further medical examination.

Côte d'Ivoire have been placed in Group D with Togo, Morocco and DR Congo.

They kick off their title defence against Togo on Monday, January 16, 2017.
