BBC'S Match of the Day host Gary Lineker has come to the defense of his fellow countryman and Manchester United legend Beckham after popular American TV personality Piers Morgan claimed on social media that the British football superstar -Beckham was overrated.
'Fame-hungry snail with dumb haircuts' England Legend Gary Lineker and TV personality Piers Morgan clash over David Beckham's footballing legacy
Gary Lineker and Piers Morgan were briefly involved in a Twitter brawl after Morgan declared Manchester United and England legend David Beckham as "overrated".
This claim comes following NFL team - Los Angeles Ram's Super Bowl victory over the weekend on Sunday, with the Rams recording a 23-20 over the Cincinnati Bengals at the grand finale on Sunday.
46-year-old David Beckham who was a former England captain is widely regarded as one of football's greatest icons and he was famed throughout his playing days for his astonishing crossing and set-piece-taking ability.
Beckham also won numerous titles throughout his time at Manchester United and added to his trophy cabinet with Real Madrid, LA Galaxy and Paris Saint-Germain.
However, Piers Morgan seemed unfazed by Beckham's decorated career and has now used Sunday night's Super Bowl to throw shades at him on Twitter.
It all began when 56-year-old former Good Morning America host posted a picture of popular Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr, who scored the game's first touchdown, with the quote 'Great to watch a Beckham who can play football...' on his official Twitter page.
Lineker then quoted his tweet on Monday morning, with the response: "You might dislike him, for whatever reason, but David Beckham was a great footballer. One of our finest."
Morgan then held Lineker to his initial tweet by phrasing it with a mocking reply which read: 'You might want to suck up to him, for whatever reason, but Beckham was the most overrated player in history. Wouldn't have got onto the Arsenal Invincibles bench.'
Morgan then went ahead to claim that Arsenal hero Freddie Ljungberg, a key member of the team which went undefeated in the 2003/04 Premier League campaign, was in a "different league".
But Lineker refused to ignore his sentiment and responded by listing David Beckham's vast achievements, writing: "6 Premier Leagues, 2 FA Cups, 1 Champions League, 1 La Liga, 1 Ligue 1, Ballon d'Or runner up. 115 caps for England, 59 as captain. One of the best crossers of the ball the game has ever seen. Yeah, overrated."
But Morgan wasn't done just yet, the 56-year-old then opted to seemingly compare Beckham to Portugal and Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.
"Take away the crossing & free-kicks, he was a fame-hungry snail with dumb haircuts who only won that much because of the truly great players around him," Morgan added.
Refusing to back down, Lineker however rubbished Morgan's suggestion and comparison. he wrote: 'Take away the crossing and free kicks? That's the equivalent of saying about Ronaldo, 'Take away the goals'.
Morgan eventually opted for a new strategy by taking a direct shot at the former Barcelona and Leicester player as he replied:
'Well no, because Ronaldo’s the greatest player in history and can do everything better than Beckham. But it would be like taking away your goal-hanging & tap-ins… you’d be lucky to make Leicester’s all-time XI without those…'
But ultimately the tie was broken as Lineker fired Morgan with a goal-blinding shot in his final response when she wrote:
'Absolutely agree, without the tap-ins and goal-hanging, I wouldn’t have scored hundreds of goals and won golden boots, I’d be like you, completely and utterly useless.'
