Super Eagles miss out of AFCON 2017
The Super Eagles of Nigeria will not be at the 2017 African Cup of Nations after losing 0-1 to Egypt in the qualifiers.
Having recorded a 1-1 draw in the first leg against the Pharaohs in Kaduna on Friday, March 25, and the withdrawal of Chad from the qualifiers, the Super Eagles needed to avoid a loss to stay in the race for the AFCON 2017.
Nigeria however fell to a second half goal from Egypt, leaving the Eagles on five points, with the Pharaohs leading the group with 10 points.
The Super Eagles had much of the ball in the first half but it was the Egyptians who had two attempts on goal.
Two save from goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi denied the Pharaohs from taking the lead in this tension-soaked encounter.
The second half started with the Super Eagles seeing much of the ball with Victor Moses disturbing the Egyptian defence.
The Pharaohs took a shock lead in the 65th minute through Ramadan Sobhy who took advantage of a bad clearance to find the breakthrough for the Egyptians.
Alex Iwobi was introduced by Samson Siasia as Nigeria were in search of a way back into the game. The youngster impact was felt instantly with his direct runs troubling the Egyptians defence.
Iwobi found Odion Ighalo whose shot was stopped by the Egyptian goalkeeper while Moses 83rd minute strike came off the post.
