A review of how Nigerian players fared with their clubs in the Champions League on Tuesday, September 12.
We review how Nigerian players fared with their clubs in the Champions League on Tuesday, September 12.
Victor Moses
Moses was on the bench all through as Chelsea thrashed Qarabag 6-0 at Stamford Bridge. With this weekend’s Premier League clash against Arsenal in mind, Antonio Conte decided to rest a couple of his first team players.
Moses’ replacement Davide Zappacosta netted a brilliant long-range goal in the rout. Moses was pictured being teased on the bench by his teammates after Zappacosta- his rival for Chelsea’s right wing-back position- scored.
Emmanuel Emenike
Emenike watched from the bench as his Olympiakos teammates conceded three goals at home to Sporting Lisbon. Emenike was introduced in the 62nd minute and it was his substitution that sparked a revival for Olympiakos.
The Nigerian striker was very difficult to handle for the Sporting Lisbon defenders. Fellow substitute Felipe Pardo scored a brace in the 89th and 93rd minutes but there was no time left to find the equaliser.
Henry Onyekuru
Onyekuru made his Champions League debut in Anderlecht’s 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
The Nigerian started on the bench and was introduced in the second half with Anderlecht already down 3-0.
Aaron Samuel
Samuel started from the start in CSKA Moscow's impressive 2-1 win away at Benfica but was taken off in the 67th minute because of an injury.
