How Brahimi won the 2014 best player award

Brahimi's record for country and club put him way ahead of Vincent Enyeama, and Yaya Toure; having secured qualification for AFCON 2015, he has helped FC Porto to a comfortable position in the UEFA Champions League

Monday's announcement for the winner for the 2014 BBC African Footballer of the Yearcame as a shocker for many Nigerians regarding the failure of 31 year-old Super Eagles goalkeeper to win the honour

Vincent Enyeama was expected to be named winner with all predictions and sentiments because he had been impressive in-front of goal for both club and country, so the wonder why he did not win the prestigious award for African stars in diaspora.

However, Analytical statistics may have been the bane for the LOSC Lille goaltender

Enyeama’s prowess last season in the French league should have been enough to make him the fans’ choice, but considering the fact Nigeria did not qualify for the 2015 AFCON tournament, the baton may have gone against him; also if he was good enough, he should have been voted best goalkeeper in the league.

24 year-old FC Porto forward, Yacine Brahimi is one the few Africans making the news in the current UEFA Champions League season.

He was responsible for Lille’s ouster from the UCL play-offs in August with a goal and an assist for Roberto Martinez in the second leg after they won the first leg 0 – 1.

Brahimi has scored four goals already in four appearances in the current campaign; his goals have helped Porto to a comfortable top position in Group H.

Ivory Coast captain, Yaya Toure led his team to Equatorial Guinea 2015, but the journey through was not as swift as it was for the Desert Foxes of Algeria who were the first country after the host to seal qualification for the Nations Cup with an almost impeccable record of 5 wins and 15 points from a possible 18.

Yaya Toure and Vincent Enyeama accept theis losses in good fate with congratulatory messages to the winner Yacine Brahimi.

''Congratulations to Yacine Brahimi on winning BBC African Player of the Year. Thanks to those that voted for me. Appreciate your support,'' Toure wrote on twitter.

''Congratulations to the Algerian guy #YacineBrahimi who won it #proudlyafrica,'' Enyeama wrote on Instagram
