Olivier Giroud and his teammates celebrate his opener

Arsenal are top of the Premier League table after a 2-0 win away at Aston Villa on Sunday, December 13.

With two points from seven league games so far this season, Villa were looking to shock Arsenal who have been buoyed with their midweek exploits in the Champions League.

Villa got the first chance as Scott Sinclair fired a shot at Petr Cech on the sixth minute.

Arsenal were however ahead in the eights from an Olivier Giroud penalty.

Theo Walcott evaded Vila right back Alan Hutton but the defender dragged him down and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

That goal was Giroud's 50 league goal as he became the third quickest player to reach that goal mark after Thierry Henry and Ian Wright.

Giroud had another chance in the 20th minute but his header from a Mesut Ozil free-kick was cleared off the line by Rudy Gestede.

Seven minutes before the break Arsenal doubled their lead from a swift counter attack.

Aaron Ramsey dispossessed Idrissa Gana near Arsenal's 18-year-box and the ball fell to Ozil.

The Arsenal No. 11 passed it to Walcott and sprinted into the Aston Villla penalty box to received the ball before squaring it to Ramsey to smash into an empty net.

Ozil now has 13 Premier League assists and is well within range of Henry’s record of 20 set in 2004-05.

Arsenal was 2-0 in to half time and came back into the second half playing on the back seat.

Villa had chances in the second half which they could not convert as Arsenal sat back.

Rudy Gestede's header went wide while Sinclair would have done better with his.

Arsenal however held on to take all the three points and  rise above Leicester and ManchesterCity to the top of the league table while Villa are are the bottom.
