AFCON 2021: Senegal, Guinea share spoils in uninspiring Group B tie

AFCON 2021 Group B favourites fail to sparkle in a dull goalless affair

Senegal vs Guinea

Senegal and Guinea played out a disappointing goalless draw during their AFCON 2021 round two game in Group B on Friday.

It was a game of few chances at the Stade Omnisports as both teams shared the spoils after failing to break the other down.

Both nations will head into the decisive final group games next week locked on four points after two matches.

After their opening day wins, Senegal and Guinea went into the high-anticipated match on Friday knowing a win would see either side through to the round of 16.

Guinea's Syli Nationale started the brightest and was brilliant in the opening half an hour as they swamped all over the Teranga Lions.

Guinea created the best chance of the half but still couldn't find a way past Senegal's goalkeeper, Seny Dieng, who was alert to deny Morgan Guilavogui with a very good save in the 31st minute.

Senegal's shaky start to the 2021 AFCON continued, only and they were lucky to go into the break on level terms courtesy of their brilliant goalkeeper, Dieng.

In the second half, both sides continued to struggle to create any meaningful chance until the 54th minute when Guinea's goalkeeper was tasted for the very first time in the match.

He was up to the task as well, keeping his side in the game with a one-handed save to deny Abdou Diallo's superbly directed header off a corner.

Senegal had another opportunity seven minutes later but would be denied by a stout defending from the Guinea defenders.

In the 66th minute, the best chance of the match fell to Bouna Sarr following good work from Sadio Mane but the Bayern Munich man failed to direct his effort at goal from seven yards out despite leaving his marker for dead.

A share of the spoils in the end for the two sides, Guinea stay top on four points, followed by Senegal, who stay second also on four points.

Senegal takes on Mali next while Guinea faces the Warriors of Zimbabwe next week Friday.
