Didier Drogba has always been known as one of the most outspoken sports athletes of his generation and that is a trend that doesn't look like ending anytime soon.

Senegal on Sunday edged out Egypt on Penalties to claim the Africa Cup Of Nations title in Cameroon and the reactions from the Senegalese fans in Dakar has been trending over the last couple of days.

On Monday night, Cote d'Ivoire Legend Didier Drogba quoted a tweet of an Incredible video of the Senegalese fans jubilating and celebrating as the Lions of Teranaga were hosted to a glorious welcome back from their Cameroon triumph.

The Chelsea legend quoted the tweet with "A « little tournament » that means a lot for us Africans".

The 43-year-old Ivorian legend's statement has been described most likely as a direct reply to Liverpool coach - Jurgen Klopp's earlier remarks about AFCON last year, before Liverpool stars, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita's release to go and represent their respective countries in the Cameroon showpiece.

In a viral tweet reposted, Klopp is quoted to have described Africa's Apex footballing tournament as a 'little tournament' in his press conference.

The Liverpool coach afterwards had faced criticism earlier for his statement but went further to clarify what he meant by the phrase 'little tournament'.

"It's not even close to the idea in my mind that I want to talk about AFCON as a little tournament, or the continent of Africa like a little continent, not at all.

"What I meant is, because people said and if you watch the full press conference if you wanted to understand it in the right way you could have understood it in the right way.

I said 'there's no international break anymore until March' and I said: 'Oh and there's a little tournament in January,' and I didn't mean a little tournament, just like you say it when there's still a tournament. It's ironic.

There's still a tournament. A big one. We lose our best players to the Africa Cup of Nations.

"I'm not a native speaker, but if you want to understand me wrong you can do that all the time. I know that I would never think like this. I never understand why you thought like this to be honest, but that's really not OK, because I would never do that, but that's it now.

"It was not my intention, but you made something of it. That's not so cool as well to be 100 per cent honest." Klopp said in November 2021.

Didier Drogba's tweet is a clear reminder of just how big a significance the Africa Cup Of Nations trophy means to African football in its entirety.

Liverpool on the other hand welcome back their two key stars - Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane for the second half of the season after the winter break came to an end, with the latter due to resume in action for Liverpool after a much-needed rest following Senegal's first AFCON title triumph.
