Eucharia Iyiazi Veteran wins bronze for Nigeria at Rio Paralympics

After six attempts, The 42-year old smashed her her Season’s Best of 27.54m to land bronze.

Veteran Nigerian athlete Eucharia Iyiazi on Thursday, September 15 won bronze for Nigeria at the ongoing Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

In the women’s F56/57 Discus throw final, Iyiazi threw a Season’s Best of 22.07m after three attempts to land her in 7th position at the end of the first round.  

The 42-year old returned to improve on her Season’s Best of 27.54m to land bronze after six attempts.

Nassima Saifi of Algeria who won gold with a thrown of 33.33m while Ireland’s Orla Barry won Silver with 30.06m.

This is Iyiazi’s fifth appearance at the Paralympics and her fourth medal.

She won Silver at the Athens 2004 Games, two gold medals in the F57/58 Discus and Shot put events at the Beijing 2008 and Bronze at London 2012.

Her bronze win takes Nigeria’s medal count at Rio Paralympics to 12.
