Nigeria’s men basketball team
D’Tigers are grouped alongside hosts Australia, Canada, and New Zeland for the men’s basketball event.
Nigeria were undefeated in their three FIBA World Cup qualifiers before the tournament but were unable to cope with their New Zealand counterparts.
New Zealand narrowly took the first quarter 24-15, but the lead was extended at the end of the second quarter to 50 -35.
Alex Nwora’s team tried to bounce back in the third quarter but were unable to as they succumbed to a rampant New Zealand team.
D’Tigers ended the third quarter 38 points behind New Zealand as it finished 81 -43.
With just one quarter left to play, D’Tigers knew the game was out of their hands but still lost by 45 points as it finished 110-65 in favour of New Zealand.
D’Tigers are ranked first in Africa (32 in the world) which sees them below all their group opponents in Gold Coast.
Group opponents Australia earlier defeated Canada 95 – 55 in the first group match.
D’Tigers will next take on Canada in their second group game of the Commonwealth Games on Saturday, April 7 while Australia takes on New Zealand on the same day.
