Gennady Golovkin Kazakh may step up weight division

After beating Kell Brook in London, middleweight Gennady Golovkin may step up a weight division.

Gennady Golovkin will step up a division if it proves impossible to find a high-calibre bout at middleweight, says his promoter Tom Loeffler.

The ferocious Kazakh maintained his unbeaten record in a thrilling fight against Kell Brook at London's O2 Arena on Saturday, defending his world IBF and WBA middleweight belts in the process.

IBF world welterweight champion Brook stepped up two divisions to take the fight with Golovkin, who struggled to find a middleweight opponent.

A showdown with another Briton in the form of WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders is an option, as is Chris Eubank Jr.

Golovkin could also step up to super-middleweight, where James DeGale is a potential opponent, and Loeffler says there are plenty of options to explore for Golovkin's next fight.

"If we can't get a unification fight, if we can't get another top name, I've told Eddie [Hearn] that the James DeGale fight would be a good fight over here," he said.

"We tried to make the Carl Froch fight a while ago, that would be a great fight.

"There's [Gilberto] Ramirez who's undefeated and the WBO champion at 168 pounds so those are all great fights.

"Naturally his focus is on the middleweight division, if we can't make unification fights or make a great fight at middleweight and one of the super-middleweights decide to fight him [then so be it].

"I mean look, Andre Ward moved out of the super-middleweight division because there weren't any big fights for him so he's fighting now [Sergey] Kovalev.

"If he [Ward] moved out, it's because there weren't big fights for him there.

"Although I know a lot of people want to see him [Golovkin] tested against bigger fighters and if the opportunity presents itself, a big fight like tonight's promotion, certainly that's something we'd definitely put together."
