Nigeria picked up two gold medals and two bronze on the opening day of the 2018 A

The Gold medal winners for Nigeria are Ukoro Peter and Sunmisola Balogun, while Ikechukwu Robinson and Esther Asaolu won bronze medals for Nigeria's team.

Two gold medals

Ukoro Peter was the first to register Nigeria's first medal at the championships, he emerged victorious in the 55kg Greco-Roman category.

He defeated Egypt's Omar Adel Abdelazi in the final 4 - 0.

“I feel very glad and happy about it,” he said, after his victory,It was awesome but enjoyable because Greco-Roman is enjoyable to me,"

“I feel very glad and by the grace of God, I know I can be the best.”

Sunmisola Balogun  won Nigeria's  other Gold medal in the Women’s Wrestling event.

Balogun defeated her counterpart from Cameroon Natasha Nabaina 5 - 4, in the 65kg Category to claim the gold medal.

Two bronze medals

Ikechukwu Robinson won bronze in the 60kg weight category after he defeated Medhi Dheker of Tunisia 8- 0.

Esther Asaolu competed in the 43kg category and was able to get a bronze medal for her efforts.

She admitted her disappointment for missing out on gold, however she thanked God for a place on the podium.

“I tried my best to win the gold but unfortunately I couldn’t."

"I thank God for helping  me win gold for my country.”  Asaolu said.

Reaction

President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation Daniel Igali, is confident that athletes represnting the country at the championships will achieve the medla target set by the Wrestling federation.

“I think they did well, all the athletes wrestled with a lot of guts,”

“We have four Olympic slots from the cadet girls. That’s unbelievable!, I remember the last time we were able to go with one girl to the (Youth) Olympics."

“We have set a target of achieving about 5 or 6 slots, and it looks like we are on course.” Igali said

Nigeria were unable to get medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics but were successful at the 2017 African Wrestling Championships in Morocco.

The African wrestling championship continues as more wrestlers are set to compete, until the competition ends on Sunday, 11th February, 2018.
