"No One Can Intimidate Me" - Stella Damasus Comments On Alleged Attempt On Her Life

Nollywood actress, Stella Damasus, according to her, is on the hit list of the Federal Government due to her fight for the rights of women and girls. Did the government actually send assassins after her?

Nollywood actress turned activist, Stella Damasus, is in the news again and this time around, she is standing her ground, saying that not even the attempt on her life few weeks ago ago by gunmen she suspected to be from the government, will cow her and stop her from standing up to demand for the rights of women and the girl child.

The genesis of the whole story is that some two weeks ago, some heavily armed men, numbering about 12, stormed her lover, Daniel Ademinokan's Abuja house where she was staying with her two daughters before relocating to the United States of America, and asked the occupants, Daniel younger brother and mother Stella's where abouts.

According to the reports, the would be assassins had asked Daniel's brother:

Your brother and his wife think they can just open their mouths and say anything they like about the government, abi?

This assertion gave Stella the impression that it was the government who wanted her death for her constant criticism of the regime as well as her strong involvement in the #BringBackOurGirls campaign which is aimed at pressurising the government to do everything possible to rescue the kidnapped Chibok girls.

She said this in a recent interview she gave on the incidence:

These are the kind of things that make people scared and run away from standing up for their rights. It’s a pity that we say Nigeria is a democratic country, but where is the democracy when people cannot speak their minds for fear of threats like this or danger of being killed.

I am not one of those who shout in the morning and then at night, I go behind the public and accept “Ghana must go” from those who are causing these problems.

We all see what is wrong and what is going on, shutting me up will not put an end to the issues we are facing. If we don’t deal with these things now, what kind of society are we leaving behind for our children and their children? Definitely not a place where they can live in freedom and peace.

This is not a popularity contest but about speaking the truth and standing up for what is right. They should shift the focus from me and place priority on the matters at hand, and place it on the safety of Nigerians, rescuing the abducted girls, deleting the bill that legally puts our little girls in the hands of pedophiles, paying attention to the amount of women dying from domestic violence daily, unemployment, inadequate health care, proper education, pension funds, economic development and all the other things that are affecting the nation.

Well said Stella. Stand for what you believe.
