3 suspects have been arrested in connection to the gruesome murder of the Mozambican national, Emmanuel Sithole, in Alexandria whose images went viral over the weekend.

Police spokesman Lungelo Dlamini says residents in Alexandra played a big role, and also added that a hunt for the 4th suspect was on.

According to Dlamini:

“A manhunt for the fourth suspect is continuing. The suspects were arrested in Alexandra with the help from members of the community. Several exhibits that may be used as evidence were seized during the arrests. The suspects are due to appear in the tomorrow.”

Meanwhile 7 people, including a 14-year-old South African boy, have now been killed in the latest wave of xenophobic violence in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

Photographs of Sithole being attacked while pleading for his life went viral over the weekend, sparking continent-wide outrage.

It is however unclear whether the man photographed stabbing Sithole was amongst those arrested.

Eyewitness News reports that the photographer who captured Siothole's images, James Oatway, says he was alerted to the commotion by some screaming, and rushed over to document what was going on.

Oatway described the stabbing as surreal and says he believes he did exactly what a photo-journalist was supposed to, and his only regret is the time lost at the first clinic, which was unable to help Sithole.
