President John Dramani Mahama has indicated that he will not interfere with the ruling of the Supreme Court on the voters register.
I am minding my business - President Mahama
"I think the two institutions are good enough to be able to handle the issues that confront them. We have an EC that is well respected, and I believe that they will do the right thing."
“I believe these institutions know how to work these things out. I have enough work on my plate to do and so I’m not going to carry anybody’s responsibility on my head,” the president said.
President Mahama also added that he doesn't’t believe the upcoming election will be rigged.
He mentioned that with the improved system of registration it will be difficult for any malpractices during the election.
“I believe that with the advantage that we have in terms of biometric registration and verification even if you didn’t have a register that was perfect …; with the added features of biometric registration and verification, I believe that even if there are names on that register and we are vigilant at the polls, nobody can use them to his advantage. Because we will all vote with our fingerprints registered,” he added.
The president made the comments on Radio Savannah in the Northern Region as part of his schedule on the “Accounting to the People” tour in the region.
The highest court of the land directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to remove the names of the 56, 000 people it presented as voters who registered with NHIA cards as evidence of their Ghanaian citizenship with immediate effect.
The five-member panel chaired by the Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood, in a unanimous decision requested the EC to give adequate notice to persons to be affected and give them the opportunity to re-register ahead of the general elections.
