3 confirmed dead in café hostage crisis

50-year-old Iranian, Haron Monis caused panic in the city when he took over the Lindt café before he was killed by police. Café manager, Tori Johnson and Sydney barrister Katrina Dawson also lost their lives in the incident.

The police in Australia have confirmed the deaths of three people in Sydney after a gunman held about 20 people hostage at a café in the city’s central business district.

50-year-old Iranian, Haron Monis caused panic in the city when he took over the Lindt café before he was killed by police. Café manager, Tori Johnson and Sydney barrister Katrina Dawson also lost their lives in the incident.

34-year-old Johnson had tried to take the gun away from Honis but was shot dead while 38-year-old Dawson, a mother of three, died on the way to a hospital after trying to shield her pregnant friend from gunfire.

Three women and a policeman were said to have sustained injuries before the attacker was eventually felled by police bullets.

The attacker entered the café early on Monday, December 15, and maintained control for 15 hours during which 5 hostages were able to escape.

Honis was born Manteghi Bourjerdi in Iran and migrated to Australia in 1996. He had been involved in previous incidents with the police and was charged last year with being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife but had been set free on bail.
