According to tweets by activist, Mama Linguere Sarr, the airport was being cleared of security officers to enable the president’s family escape.
“An order has been give to clear the airport of all other security officers, including NIA officers; Jammeh's wife and kids fleeing,” she tweeted.
Gambian journalist, Sanna Camara had earlier also tweeted that Jammeh's pilot had been put on standby while his plane was fueled and ready to go.
"Jammeh's pilot, a white S/African been put on standby; plane fueled, ready. A flight expected from Morrocco," Camara said.
Meanwhile, the country’s National Assembly has issued a speedy declaration to extend Jammeh’s tenure by 90 days.
The president had earlier declared a state of emergency to also last 90 days in a desperate bid to hang on to power.
Nigeria and Senegal have teamed up to prepare troops for a possible military intervention and the US has warned Jammeh to step down or face the consequences of his actions.
