Gunmen exchange fire, kill 2 guards at Garissa University College

Reports say masked gunmen exchanged gunfire with security forces at the Garissa University College for several hours and have possibly taken hostages also.

Unidentified gunmen have forced their way into a North Eastern college campus in Kenya on Thursday morning, April 2, 2015, setting of explosions, shooting and killing two guards, reports say.

Reuters reports that the gunmen, masked, exchanged gunfire with security forces at the Garissa University College for several hours and have possibly taken hostages also.

The gunmen are likely to have taken some students captive as many are currently trapped inside the campus which is located in the town of Garissa.

"Two guards who were manning the gate at the university have been killed. We can hear gunshots from inside the compound but at this point we can't tell who is shooting at who or what”, a policewoman at the scene tells Reuters.

No group or sect has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

In late 2013, Somali Islamist group al Shabaab staged a four-day siege at the Kenya's Westgate mall, leaving dozens dead.

al Shabaab is reported to have vowed to punish Kenya for sending troops into Somalia alongside African Union peacekeepers to fight the group.
