8,000 extremists may disrupt world leaders' meeting

It is doubtful that the Group of Seven (G7) meeting that Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to attend today, June 7, will hold as thousands of protesters reportedly stormed the venue of the meeting on Saturday.

One of the protesters, Monika Lambert said she had come “to exercise my democratic rights to say that everything the G-7 decides is in the interest of the banks and capitalists.”

A police representative, Hans-Peter Kammerer, said on Saturday, that the demonstrations were peaceful, noting that significant numbers of “extremists” from Germany, Austria, Italy, and Britain were thought to be joining the expected crowd of about 8,000.

However, the government has deployed 17,000 police around the former winter Olympic Games venue at the foot of Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze. And another 2,000 are on stand-by across the border in Austria, to ensure maximum security.
