The United States ambassador to Libya,  Deborah Jones, has signed off Twitter following a series of vulgar attacks against her.

According to Mashable, the diplomat came under fire from critics on Monday over a tweet about an attack on the town of Tarhuna and proceeded to sign off the micro blogging site for the time being saying:

"I have concluded it is best to cease efforts to communicate via Twitter insofar as it distracts from our goal of peace & stability"

She however noted that the U.S. Embassy in Libya will continue to post official statements on the embassy's Facebook page.

The embattled diplomat has been active on Twitter for some time and regularly commented on often tumultuous current events in the country with real-time updates.

Although she has been based in Malta since the conflict began escalating in July 2014, she regularly dispelled rumors on U.S. diplomatic involvement in the country and weighed in on news from the region via Twitter.

But the controversial tweet that kicked off the vitriol was when she sent out the tweet on the air strike on Tarhuna, saying 8 displaced people had been killed in the incident.

Several Twitter users refuted the claim saying while there was an air strike, no one died in it, with some threatening to her.

Jones was posted to Libya in 2012, following the attack in which former Libyan ambassador Chris Stevens and 3 other Americans were killed in an attack on the Consulate building in Benghazi.
