May 20 (The Sports Xchange) - Los Angeles Dodgers starter Hyun-Jin Ryu will have shoulder surgery on Thursday and will not pitch this season, the team said Wednesday.
The left-hander developed a sore pitching shoulder in late March during spring training and has been unable to fill the starting spot the Dodgers had planned for him.
The Colorado Rockies demoted veteran outfielder Drew Stubbs to Triple-A Albuquerque and called up outfielder Brandon Barnes.
Stubbs, 30, is hitting .118 with two home runs and five RBIs while making $5.8 million. He has struck out 31 times in 56 plate appearances.
The New York Yankees called up outfielder Slade Heathcott from Triple-A to take the roster spot from Jacoby Ellsbury, who went on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee sprain.
Ellsbury tweaked his knee swinging at a pitch in the fourth inning Tuesday against the Washington Nationals.
The Oakland Athletics placed left-hander Drew Pomeranz on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left AC joint.
Pomeranz (2-3, 4.40 ERA) left his start in the fifth inning Monday night with shoulder tightness.
The Boston Red Sox acquired right-hander John Cornely from the Atlanta Braves.
The Braves will receive cash considerations in return for Cornely, who had been designated for assignment by Atlanta on Tuesday. He will report to Triple-A Pawtucket. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
