NPP might be taken 'serious' if Afoko is re-admitted - Dr Gyampo

The Human Rights Division of the Accra High Court on Monday, August 15, 2016, dismissed a suit filed by Paul Afoko in the case in which he is challenging his suspension as national chairman of the New Patriotic Party.

According to him, the party must remain united “if they cherish their desire to also capture political power”.

Mr Afoko has been in court challenging a suspension handed down to him by the NPP’s Disciplinary Committee for alleged misconduct.

The suspended Chair had earlier described his suspension as unconstitutional and a breach of natural justice.

But the Human Rights Division of the Accra High Court on Monday, August 15, 2016, dismissed a suit filed by Paul Afoko in the case in which he is challenging his suspension as national chairman of the New Patriotic Party.

According to the judgment of the presiding judge, Justice Anthony Yeboah, the suspension of Mr. Afoko was just, lawful and fair.

He further added that the procedure used for the suspension was right and was not breached in any way by the NPP.

Afoko had subsequently said that even though he respected the decision handed down by the court, he disagreed with it.

He said he will launch an appeal against the decision at the appropriate time.

But Ransford Gyampo believes a continuous battle over the issue in the court will not be the best way forward towards resolving the issue.

“I think they [NPP] should focus more on overtures aimed at bringing Mr Afoko and indeed all other people who have been suspended on board because going into the 2016 elections, I’m sure we all saw the ruling NDC, how united they were in trying to launch their campaign yesterday. And I think it should be a lesson for the NPP. It is true that so many things have happened and that it’s quite different trying to patch up, but in politics, anything can happen, and so if they cherish their desire to also capture political power they should be mindful of the fact that politics is about the game of numbers.

“...And I’m sure that if they are able to close their ranks and remain united when they hit the campaign platform and they go on various rallies trying to solicit for votes, people may take them serious,” he told Accra-based TV3.
