Some older app versions will no longer be supported from April 2015

The service made this known today on its blog saying that apart from normal web browsers, certain mobile devices and other devices used to access YouTube’s services will also be affected.

Google-owned YouTube has announced today that certain versions of the video streaming site will no longer be supported after April 2015.

The service made this known today on its blog saying that apart from normal web browsers, certain mobile devices and other devices used to access YouTube’s services will also be affected.

This development comes on the back YouTube’s API upgrade in preparation for it to launch more features to broaden the user experience.

The company says for this reason, t will be shutting down older versions of the app. Current YouTube apps will not be working on certain device models from 2012 and earlier.

YouTube further explains that it will continue to focus its efforts on improving the official app for TV, which will be available on most 2013 and later Smart Tvs and Blu-ray players, game consoles, streaming devices and set-up boxes, regardless of  the changes made.

Devices affected as posted on YouTube’s site are:

Select devices manufactured in 2012 and earlier, including:

  • Sony TVs & Blu-ray Discs
  • Panasonic TVs & Blu-ray Discs
  • Sony PlayStation Vita
  • Older iOS (iOS 5 and earlier) devices
  • Older Apple TV (1st and 2nd gen)
  • Older set-top boxes (e.g. DirectTV)

Devices not affected

  • Android (download the YouTube app from the Google Play Store)
  • Apple iPhone/iPad running iOS 6 or later (download the YouTube app from the App Store)
  • Apple TV (3rd gen model w/1080p, or newer)
  • Google TV (V3 and V4)
  • Android TV
  • Most 2013 and newer Smart TVs and Blu-ray players
  • Streaming devices including Roku, Western Digital and Chromecast
  • Set-top boxes including Virgin Media, BSkyB Now TV Box, TiVo and J:Com
  • Game consoles: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii, Wii U and 3DS
  • Desktops, laptops or other devices (Mac, PC, etc) with a web browser supported by www.youtube.com
  • Phones, tablets or other devices (Kindle, Windows Phone, Blackberry, Nokia, Android, iOS, etc) with a web browser supported by m.youtube.com
