Social network launches Food account to broaden appeal

The Twitter Food account is a great idea considering that the company is looking for ways to expand its appeal in order to find a new, much general audience.

The Twitter Food account.

Twitter launched @TwitterFood yesterday, a dedicated account that filters through the maze of food-related tweets shared on the social network and offers a curated selection of hand-picked missives from bigwigs in the field. Including Martha Stewart and Alton Brown, as well as posts from the general public.

The Twitter Food account is a great idea considering that the company is looking for ways to expand its appeal in order to find a new, much general audience. While the network has a strong group of die-hard users, it’s still struggling to gain ground in the broader market the way Facebook has.

Twitter Food isn’t the first curated feed on the network; Twitter Music and Twitter Sports have been operating in the same cadre. But focusing attention on high areas of attention that is more likely to catch the interest of user groups outside the news is a very wise move.
