On Wednesday, the 30th of November 2016, members of the Senate read a bill to create a Chartered Institute of Entrepreneurs and passed it for second reading.
Legislative house passes bill to create Chartered Institute of Entrepreneurs
True to form, the Senate sitting in plenary passed the controversial bill for second reading.
The bill was first put forward by SenatorGaniyu Olanrewaju Solomon.
Fresh from directing the National Communications Commission to reverse the proposed increase in the price of data, the Senate decided to take three steps backward by proposing the bill for the creation of a body to "regulate the practice of entrepreneurs".
In the words of Senator Ibrahim Gobir who read the bill before the house, "the bill will help channel a pathway for rising entrepreneurs". All this seems very ironic; the entrepreneurship ecosystem has flourished in recent times and government involvement in Nigerian enterprise has a history of doing more harm than good.
Consider the fact that there is no void that this proposed Institute is supposed to fill and it begs the idea that our senators probably had too much time on their hands.
For the sake of everything good about entrepreneurship, we hope the bill dies at the next stage.
