Telecom company's 4G LTE service is live in Nigeria

If you have an MTN SIM card with a compatible 4G enabled phone, you can access the LTE network.

A customer leaves an MTN shop in Johannesburg April 10, 2012.

Inasmuch as MTN's Visafone acquisition and 800Mhz spectrum usage is now in complete turmoil, the telecom company's 4G service is still live for everyone across Nigeria.

If you have an MTN SIM card with a compatible 4G enabled phone, you can access the LTE network. You don't have to subscribe to a special bundle either - the regular data bundles still apply.

To check whether your current SIM and phone is compatible for 4G LTE access, text "4G' to 131 and you should get a text telling if either or both your SIM and phone are compatible.

However, if your phone is compatible and your SIM isn't, you will have to switch your SIM to one that is 4G ready. Note though that 4G enabled SIMs do not store phone numbers, in case you still save numbers that way.

TechSuplex reports that MTN, in an internal correspondence on the launch of its 4G network, said, “In line with our efforts to deepen the growth and rollout of broadband across Nigeria, we are excited ti announce that MTN’s 4G service is now available in Lagos and Abuja (with other locations coming soon).”

Supersanusi of TechSuplex however says that even though the correspondence says the service is available in Lagos and Abuja only, he has tested the service outside Lagos and Abuja.

If you try out the service, please give us feedback on your experience with it. We want to hear from you!
