The organization will be hosting a blood drive, themed #LoveDrive, in Lagos in a few days. The company promises a fun event, where people can come to hang out with celebrities, meet people and ultimately save lives. There will be also be free medical checkups, food and drinks, according to an Innovation Village report.
The report further reveals that the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service will be on ground with its personnel to conduct free mini medical checkups in addition to conducting the donation process. The service will also screen all donated and then they will have them distributed to health facilities across the state.
In Lagos State, 185,000 pints of blood are needed annually but only 80,000 pints are collected, most of which are from blood touts and paid donors, which ultimately, is not an efficient blood collection system. This inefficiency, in turn, leads to 25% of maternal mortality and countless deaths of children under the age of 5.
The Nigerian national blood agency, NBTS says that 10% of the nation’s population is expected to donate voluntarily to meet the nation’s demand; however, out of 1.7 million units of blood needed, only a meagre 49,908 voluntarily donated units were recorded for 2014.
LifeBank hopes to solve this problem by creating a movement of young healthy Nigerian voluntary donors using tech as a tool.
The event is scheduled to hold on 13th February, 2016 at 294, Herbert Macaulay Way, Sabo, Yaba, Lagos from 10am to 5pm.
