Tech giant's new smartphone has two screens and two selfie cameras

Users will be able to keep that second screen on constantly to show weather, time, date, and battery status “without impacting battery life”, according to LG.

LG V10 smartphone

LG is renaming its powerful smartphone series, and the first – named the V10 – marks a new smartphone start, with some notable features all on the front of the device.

The company is literally doubling on features, with two 5-megapixel selfie cameras and an interesting second screen that is connected to the first.

The extra display is right above the 5.7-inch Quad HD main display, but it works separately. Users will be able to keep that second screen on constantly to show weather, time, date, and battery status “without impacting battery life”, according to LG.

When the entire display is turned on however, the top display can then be used for app shortcuts even if you are in the midst of another app – or anywhere else that is not the home screen.

As for the cameras, the idea is that two cameras taking separate images at the standard 80-degree angle is better than a wide-angle lens. Self-portraiture is available in two flavors: the standard 80-degree kind, or the everyone-must-show 120-degree option which basically stitches the two images take by both cameras together.

The most baffling feature of the V10, however, is LG’s “multi-view recording” which engages all three cameras on the V10. I can’t wrap my head around why you would want to do that.

Other interesting features include a manual recording mode that lets you tinker with all the settings for video recording, wind noise and audio monitor to adjust the sensitivity of all three mics during recording, a microSD card storage expansion and a removable 3,000 mAh battery.

The phone will launch in first in Korea this month in two kinds of blue, black, white and beige. It will be then be available elsewhere around the world later in the year.
