Leadership Class

The sad thing is that leaders who perform woefully, really don’t know they are fumbling. They even see feedback as a challenge on their authority.

Here are the 6 simple things that make many team leaders fail:

1. Selfishness: Selfish leaders always push for their own agenda. They are always tuned to WIII FM (What Is In It For Me). They use people rather than build them.

2. Lack of trust: Your team members will go out of their way to help you if they trust you. Distrustful leaders are always suspicious of everyone and every intention. They deliberately choose not to delegate duties, and their stock in trade is to encourage factions and gossip.

3. Lack of passion: Passion always persuades. A leader without passion cannot lead in critical times.

4. No reward system: Team members are motivated when their efforts are rewarded. A well organised reward system will give the team a feeling that they are appreciated.

5. Poor communication skills: Communication is a two-way process. It involves sending and receiving messages. This means leaders have to understand how to communicate their ideas in a simple and easy to understand manner.

Always ask for feedback to ensure your message is properly understood. A good listening skill is a useful tool for every leader.

6. Lack of proper feedback mechanism: Feedback is key to the success of every team. As a leader, you should always ask for your followers’ input. Accept criticism without being defensive.

Always demand for detailed reports from your team members. Something as simple as not acknowledging or replying e-mails is a sign of a broken feedback mechanism.

The fly that does not listen will end up in the grave with the corpse. I think this proverb summarises the importance of feedback in a team.
