Real time traffic updates on Google Maps in Nigeria

A new feature has been added to the Google Maps for Nigeria – real time traffic conditions.

The traffic conditions are represented by three color codes namely Green, Orange and Red. Green represents a free road; orange means the traffic is not too bad; and red signifies, well, typical Lagos traffic.

The real time traffic update works by analyzing data transmitted by the GPS locations on people’s mobile phone.

That means mobile phone location has to be turned on for this work. Google then takes that information and generates a live traffic map by calculating the speed of users along the length of the road with it.

Unfortunately this feature is limited as it is only as reliable as the number of people using Google Maps at that particular time, and on that road. Ergo, fewer users will birth poor traffic prediction quality. ‘

TechCabal reports that the feature has also been spotted in Nairobi, Kenya.
