This app wants to make you a music guru

The digital virtual assistant now has the capacity to name songs playing around you and more.

This follows a range of other smart devices the tech giants introduced earlier such as the Google Home Mini, which has had some challenges.

In an update that came today to all devices that have Google Assistant, on summoning the virtual personal assistant, you can ask “what song is this?” or “what song is playing?,” and the Assistant will pull up a card for you with the name of the song, the artist, lyrics, and YouTube, Google Play Music (of course), and Spotify streaming links.

Initially, song identification only kicks in after about a minute of listening and only works on popular songs as seen with the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

The recent update now adds the ability to identify songs on-demand for everyone with access to the Google Assistant.

However, this seems to be region specific, or geographically limited, at least for now.

The Pulse Tech team tried out the feature and found out the feature is not supported in Nigeria. So looks like Shazam, a music app offering similar features with the Google Assistant would have nothing much to worry about in Nigeria, at the very least.
