Facebook's photo-sharing site now has 700 million users

Facebook will be happy with Instagram’s growth, especially because the photo-sharing platform is it’s best bet at fighting Snapchat.

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom.

Instagram is growing so fast, it’s becoming hard to keep up with.

In December 2016, the photo-sharing site announced that it had hit 600 million users. Barely four months after that announcement, it has added 100 million new users to take the figure to 700 million monthly active users.

For context, it took the company — which is owned by Facebook — nine months to go from 400 to 500 million users and six months to go from 500 to 600 million users. That means Instagram’s growth has more than doubled in the last two years!

Still, Instagram has the smallest number of users in the Facebook-owned platforms family with WhatsApp and Messenger currently at 1.2 billion users and the core Facebook site itself sitting pretty with 1.9 billion users.

Facebook will be happy with Instagram’s growth, especially because the photo-sharing platform is it’s best bet at fighting Snapchat, which has been the biggest threat to Facebook since Google tried (and failed) to get into social media.
