Lollipop is now the most popular version of Google's Mobile OS

There is finally a new Android flavor on top of the heap. Google has published updated stats which show which version of Android is now the most used and that version is Lollipop, taking 36.1 percent of device share in early March. KitKat is now the former champ with 34.3 percent.

This is a big milestone in that it signifies that many Android users are using a much more modern version of the mobile platform.

According to a VentureBeat report, Lollipop is leading 16 months after it shipped, and 5 months after the launch of Marshmallow.

The reason behind this is that phone owners have either had to wait a long time for their Lollipop upgrades, or they haven't been in a rush to get those few devices running the latest code.

On a more positive note, Marshmallow adoption has grown nearly double within one month, to 2.3 percent. That isn't much but it shows that Marshmallow upgrades are arriving fast and quick.

The Marshmallow figures should also get a healthy boost soon with Marshmallow-toting flagships like the LG G5 and Samsung Galaxy S7 all arriving with a bang later this year (the Samsung Galaxy S7 goes on sale on March 11).
