Google had announced at its I/O developers conference back in June that Android had about a billion monthly active users, and now CEO Sundar Pichai has revealed that Google’s mobile OS now has over 1.4 billion monthly active users.

More than one billion people have used the Google Play Store in a recent 30-day period, much of which have been in countries like Indonesia and Vietnam, where Android ownership has doubled in a year thanks to many people buying smartphones for the first time.

Google is anticipating future growth depending on handsets becoming increasingly affordable, a core purpose behind the company’s Android One initiative.

Pichai also added that by the end of this year, there will be more Chromebook's than all other devices combined in US schools.

Pichai was recently appointed CEO of Google after the company separated its operations and began to operate under the Alphabet parent company.
