Tribunal upholds election of Duoye Diri as Bayelsa Governor

The Bayelsa Governorship Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja has upheld the election of Senator Duoye Diri as Bayelsa State Governor.

This is coming a month after the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal by Timi Alaibe challenging Diri’s candidacy in the November 2019 governorship election in Bayelsa.

Alaibe is a former aspirant of the Bayelsa governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Following a unanimous judgement by the panel on Saturday, the tribunal held that the petition filed by Owei Woniwei of the Alliance for Democracy is incompetent and lacks merit, Channels TV reports.

The tribunal also held that Woniwei failed to prove the allegations of the forged declaration of age and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharged certificate levelled against Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, the Deputy Governor of the state.

It would be recalled that Diri, who came second in the November 2019 governorship election in Bayelsa was declared winner after the Supreme Court sacked David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who had earlier been declared winner of the election.

Lyon was sacked because his running mate was found culpable of discrepancies in his school certificates.
