The International Criminal Court (ICC) is set to investigate the actions of Nigeria’s First Lady, Patience Jonathan.

This was revealed on Monday, March 16, by the Office of the Prosecutor at the ICC to Punch via email.

The ICC has said that Mrs Jonathan is liable to prosecution after she was accused of making inciting comments which could lead to violence.

The petition was lodged by the All Progressives Congress (APC) after the First Lady urged her supporters to stone the party’s members.

“With regards to your enquiry, the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court can confirm receipt of the communication referred to since the sender (APC) has made this fact public in the media,” the email read.

The email also reportedly added that the ICC would take all the necessary steps to get to the bottom of the issue, including interrogating the Mrs Jonathan and others named in the APC petition.

The Prosecutor of the ICC, Fatou Bensouda also stated that the ICC would not hesitate to prosecute anyone who promotes or instigates violence before, during or after the general elections.

The APC had promised to report the First Lady to the ICC but the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), via spokesperson Femi Fani-Kayode, said that the opposition party had no case against Mrs Jonathan.
