Former Presidential aspirant, Pat Utomi has risen to the defence of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu after the latter was severely criticized for threatening Igbos in the state.

Oba Akiolu had told a group of Igbo leaders on Sunday, April 5, 2015, that anyone who fails to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode would perish in the Lagoon.

Utomi however stated on Tuesday, April 7, via Twitter that the Oba must have speaking in jest.

“The arena of politics slippery slope. The remarks by the Oba of Lagos are inappropriate but all who know him know he talks so in jest,” Utomi wrote.

“Have known Oba Akiolu for 20yrs. He says worse to me every time we see but I have no doubt he is fond of me. How do you tell outsiders so?” he added.

Nigerians on social media however took offence to Professor Utomi’s comment and attacked him for defending the Oba. Read tweets below:
