The All Progressives Congress (APC) demanded the cancellation of the elections based on alleged malpractice.
However, during the collation of results on Tuesday, March 31, the INEC Chairman stated that there was no basis to cancel the polls.
“Sunday morning, I received a petition from APC demanding for the cancellation and rescheduling of elections. I circulated this memo to the Commission. We reviewed it and set up a 3-man Committee to Rivers & returned this morning with their observations,” Jega said.
“We do not believe the allegations are substantial enough to require the cancellation/rescheduling of the elections in Rivers. The decision of the Commission is that we will take the results of the elections in Rivers state,” he added.
The APC won 69,238 votes in Rivers while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won 1,487,075 votes.
