5 things we learnt from ex president's interview

Goodluck Jonathan says he's under pressure to contest the presidency again in 2019. Here are other things we just learnt.

We parse some of his comments below....

1. Jonathan is easily moved to tears

Remember that time when we thought Jonathan was really an emotional person? Oh well, he just confirmed it.

Jonathan says when he moves around Nigeria, he gets to meet people who yell: “GEJ, we want you back”.

And then the man dissolves into tears in response.

“People come to me every day saying they want me back. I’m always moved to tears whenever I go out and see the huge crowds shouting GEJ, we want you, even in the north”.

Who's peeling onions in the background?

2. Jonathan says his time out of office has humbled him

“Instead of getting swollen headed, I actually reflect on my achievements and mistakes and feel humbled and feel very sober…”, Jonathan says.

A handkerchief anyone?

3. Jonathan isn’t ruling out running for president again

Like, the man would consider running again if the PDP 2019 ticket isn’t zoned to the country’s north.

“I’m not God but I sincerely doubt the possibility (of running again),” Jonathan said.

But here’s the clincher: “Are you not aware that our party has zoned the presidency to the north, and the chairmanship to the south?

“Even Fayose that has declared his interest may face big challenges because of the decision of our party.”

Make of that what you will.

4. Jonathan regards Obasanjo as 'the boss of bosses'

Obasanjo and Jonathan may have fallen out on one too many occasion in the past, but the latter still retains plenty of respect and adulation for the former.

"..Baba OBJ, the boss of all bosses. We’ve all learnt at different times that you ignore OBJ at your own peril. OBJ has the magic wand, respected at home and abroad.”

Touché.

5. Atiku won’t get the APC ticket, according to Jonathan

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has one job since forever.

Jonathan posits that as long as Atiku remains in the APC, he may well kiss his presidential ambition goodbye.

“He (Atiku) can’t get the APC ticket. If Atiku gets our party (PDP) ticket, he would compete well. He’s always a passionate politician”, Jonathan said.

This is like wooing Atiku back into the PDP.

Jonathan defeated Atiku to win the 2011 presidential ticket from the PDP platform.
