Tribunal annuls election of Ogun Senator

The election of Buruji Kashamu as a Senator in Ogun State has been annulled by a tribunal and a rerun has been ordered.

The election of Buruji Kashamu as the Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, has been overturned by the National and State Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Kashamu who won the election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was dragged before the tribunal by the candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Prince Dapo Abiodun, and in his ruling, the tribunal Chairman, Justice Ebiowei Tobi, overturned the victory and ordered re-run in 110 polling units.

Delivering the judgment earlier today, Justice Ebimowei noted that there were some irregularities and anomalies during the elections, ground enough to annul the election and order for a rerun.

Ebimowei specifically noted that Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area was the only local government that elections were not cancelled due to irregularities out of the nine LGAs in Ogun East.

Kashamu has been battling the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA), over his extradition to the UK to answer to drug charges against him.

Despite the charges hanging on his neck, members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) handed Kashamu the 'Golden Man of the Year', thereby causing serious division within its rank.
