President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly said that former President Goodluck Jonathan and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were not mentally prepared to lose the March 2015 general election.

Buhari made the comment on Monday, November 16, 2015, while speaking on “The Challenges of Transition in Nigeria” at an event organized by the National Democratic Institute, Punch reports.

The president, who was represented by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said that the lack of preparation prevented the Jonathan administration from putting necessary structures in place.

“Our experience in the last transition process was unique despite the fact that we have held many general elections and transitioned from one government to another,” Buhari said.

“Indeed, the last election heralded the first real transition in the history of our nation, being the first time that an opposition party will sweep the ruling party out of power,” he added.

The PDP lost its 16-year position as Nigeria’s ruling party after suffering defeat at Buhari’s hands.
