Senate confirms Amaechi as minister

Amaechi was confirmed today, October 29, 2015, after the Senate rejected the report of the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges on a petition filed against him.

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The complaint had been filed by three Senators from Rivers citing the allegations of corruption levelled against the former governor.

The committee had earlier ruled that it could not stop Amaechi’s confirmation because the case against himwas still being heard by a court.

Ekiti State Senator, Biodun Olujimi however tried to compel the Senate to consider the report against Amaechi saying that the petition was “a moral burden on the House.”

Committee Chairman, Sam Anyanwu also said that due to the report, the Senate had ‘no right to recommend confirmation.’

Meanwhile, some Senator-members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) begged to leave the Senate chamber while the proceedings were ongoing.

It had earlier been reported that some PDP Senators were determined to stop Amaechi’s confirmation due to the part he played in the downfall of the party.

The Senate has now confirmed all 36 of President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees.
