Senator suggests merging states to save money

Murray-Bruce made the suggestion as a possible solution to the inability of some states to pay their workers’ salaries.

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has suggested that the Nigerian government merge some states in the country in a bid to save the country.

The Senator, who represents the Bayelsa East Senatorial District, made the comment via Twitter on Thursday, June 11, 2015.

“Since its clear many states can’t pay salary without FG allocation, should we consider merging states especially as oil revenue is reducing?” he tweeted.

“I think we are underestimating the issue of unpaid workers salary. It's too widespread. If not checked it can ignite a kind of Arab Spring,” he said.

“Its wrong to single out any one state on this owing workers salary. Half our states owe! Its a national emergency. Let's discuss Solutions!” Murray-Bruce said.

The Senator has, in recent times, been vocal about the need for Nigeria to reduce its expenditure in order to ensure development in the country.
