INEC cancels polls in Southern Ijaw

The election was cancelled due to widespread reports of violence and ballot box snatching.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cancelled the conduct of the Bayelsa State governorship elections in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.

The election was cancelled due to widespread reports of violence and ballot box snatching, Premium Times reports.

Some electoral official were also reportedly abducted from the area during the conduct of the polls.

INEC is expected to declare the governorship elections inconclusive due to the cancellation.

A later date for supplementary elections will be announced by the electoral body.

Resident of the state had taken to the streets today, December 7, 2015, to protest against the malpractice which took place during the conduct of the polls.

Results which had been released before the cancellation showed that incumbent Governor, Seriake Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was in the lead.

Dickson’s main opponent is Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
