Senator Abba Ibrahim has been seen stark naked in a viral video. He should spare us the spectacle next time.

A video of Alhaji Bukar Abba Ibrahim dressing up after an alleged sex romp with two ladies in a cheap motel, has gone viral.

Abba Ibrahim needs no introduction. He is a serving Nigerian senator. He was also Governor of Yobe State between 1999 and 2007.

He currently represents the people of Yobe East in the upper legislative chamber.

In the video, Abba Ibrahim can be seen looking for his underpants in a dimly lit room. His pot belly overlaps onto his groin without restraint.

As the smartphone camera pans the room, the senator is stark naked at one point before slipping his boxers on. A lady in red flip-flops struts the room like the queen of the jungle and probably does the recording. She mutters a few words in Hausa, Abba Ibrahim looks up and ‘click’.

Abba Ibrahim slips into his ‘Babariga’ and the footage goes dead.

The man hasn’t denied that he’s the one who was pacing the room in that footage in his birthday suit.

On the contrary, he has a problem with the characters who leaked the tape to the public and Nigerians who are questioning his right to an orgy behind the scenes.

Senator Ibrahim is outraged that his right to privacy has been trampled on by the internet.

“This is a personal, private matter”, the senator lectures. “What does my having been with a girl have to do with the public?”

Senator Ibrahim says he’s just become the victim of a blackmail.

“You know the normal thing: people ask for unreasonable things, and if you deny them, they try to blackmail you if they have a way.”

He also added that what the world has been treated to this week was just sex between two consenting adults.

The senator said he knew when he was being filmed, but was assured that it was only for fun and illumination of the room.

As it turned out, he was fooled--all rotund tummy and loose flesh of him.

“They just mentioned it to me as a joke and I took it as nothing really serious,” he explained. “This is something that happened between two adults.”

Fair enough. But when your sex tape becomes public property, it's no longer a private matter.

Senator Ibrahim also promised an investigation.

“I have commenced investigations to find out why it is circulating,” the senator said. “But from all indications, it is a blackmail.”

Senator Ibrahim is right. No one has a right to his private life. We all do nasty things when nobody's watching and a senator shouldn’t be deprived of a bit of fun like the rest of mankind.

However, when you are a former Governor and serving lawmaker; when you are a well known politician and public servant, discretion says you don’t allow yourself to be filmed from a smartphone or any other recording device for that matter, when in an uncompromising position.

When you are Bukar Abba Ibrahim who introduced the Sharia law in Yobe in 2000, wisdom says you conduct your affairs above board; that you do not allow yourself to be misled by the thing dangling between your legs--that you do not become a slave to your passions or pastime.

Decorum says that if you’ve got to have sex with side-chicks and the likes, spare us the images.

Senator Ibrahim can rage all he wants about intrusion to his private life, but he should be pointing the finger at no one else but himself for giving the nod to be caught pants down and butt naked.

To hear him say the video was recorded with his consent, tells you that Mr. Ibrahim enjoys the very idea of sex tapes and probably has a stockpile of those tucked in some closet.

Welcome to depravity central.

But senator Ibrahim isn’t alone.

US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle play Ambassador Entwistle once accused Nigerian lawmakers of soliciting for sex in Cleveland (US Embassy)

In June of 2016, then U.S ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, accused three members of the House of Representatives of sexual misconduct on U.S soil. The House would later clear these ‘dishonorable’ lawmakers of sexual assault.

It is little wonder that when lawmakers of this ilk make laws for the rest of us, there is no nexus between said laws and the good of the people.

Lawmakers or all men of good conscience should know how to rein in their sexual urges and keep their sex lives out of smartphones in a smart age.

That the flabby tummy of a Nigerian senator is the biggest spectacle we’ve been treated to this week, is sobering reminder that our redemption as a people is still some way off.
