FRSC convicts 26 violators , 28 others for various offences in Kaduna

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna State Command, says it has so far convicted no fewer than 26 motorists for speed limiting device violation and fined each of them N3,000.

FRSC commenced the enforcement the use of the device by commercial drivers throughout the country on Feb.1, predicting that the use of the device would save the nation about 70 per cent of road accidents annually.

The Sector Legal Officer of the command, Mr Ibrahim Tanko, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Thursday that the motorists were convicted on Wednesday.

He further said that the motorists concerned appeared in a mobile court on Kaduna-Abuja expressway, prosecuted and found guilty of the offence.

Tanko said that 28 others were also convicted for various traffic offences; ranging from driver’s license, over loading, number plate and seat belt among others.

“FRSC has in the last six months embarked on enlightenment of motorists on the use of the speed limiting device prior to its full enforcement yesterday."

“As such, there is no excuse whatsoever for any commercial vehicle driver not to have the device installed in his vehicle. Therefore, no more for any violator as enforcement continues, “he said.

The Spokesman of the FRSC headquarters, Mr Bisi Kazeem, told newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja that sector and field commands of the agency had been fully mobilised for the exercise.

Kazeem said that the Army, Police,Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps,(NSCDC),the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies were also on standby to provide security support for the success of the exercise.

The spokesman added that sector commanders had been instructed to carry out joint patrols with unit commands in February to ensure effectiveness of the exercise.

He stated that mobile courts had been set up nationwide to ensure that commercial drivers install the device in their vehicles, adding that defaulters could pay up to N3,000 as penalty, depending on the discretion of the court.The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna State Command, says it has so far convicted no fewer than 26 motorists for speed limiting device violation and fined each of them N3,000.
