President meets service chiefs in Abuja

The president had promised to intensify the fight against insecurity in the country in his Monday speech.

President Muhammadu Buhari

This was disclosed by the president's Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, on his Twitter account .

He tweeted, "President Muhammadu Buhari is currently presiding over security council meeting with all service chiefs, IGP, NSA and others in attendance."

President Buhari resumed his official duties on Monday, August 21, after making his return to the country on Saturday, August 19, 103 days after he left for London to resume treatment for an undisclosed illness.

While speaking during his national address on Monday, the president spoke largely about insecurity in the country, especially the resurgence of terrorist group, Boko Haram.

He said, "I am charging the Security Agencies not to let the successes achieved in the last 18 months be a sign to relax.

"Terrorists and criminals must be fought and destroyed relentlessly so that the majority of us can live in peace and safety.

"Therefore we are going to reinforce and reinvigorate the fight not only against; elements of Boko Haram which are attempting a new series of attacks on soft targets, kidnappings, farmers versus herdsmen clashes;  in addition to ethnic violence fuelled by political mischief makers. We shall tackle them all."

The service chiefs at Tuesday's meeting include Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff; Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Ibik–Eke Ibns; and Chief of Air Staff, AirMarshal Sadique Abubakar.

In July, then-Acting President Yemi Osinbajohad ordered all the service chiefs to relocate to the Maiduguri command centre for a more coordinated war against Boko Haram.

This was after the group carried out a spate of daring attacks that led to the death of over a hundred Nigerians in July alone.

In Osinbajo's meeting with the chiefs weeks ago, he had also pledged the government's commitment to providing more surveillance devices and other vital security gadgets for Nigerian troops.
